چکیده

Bioenergy through short rotation forestry could hold potential for fossil fuel displacement mitigating enhanced climate change by using various combustion, carbon capture technologies, and sequestration technologies. Two routes, gasification and pyrolysis, show potential for enabling bioenergy to become carbon negative rather than carbon neutral. One further relatively unexplored route is biochar, a naturally occurring material that may offer a unique link between bioenergy and sequestration that is both simple and energy bearing.

Sinks, Energy Crops and Land Use: Coherent Climate Policy Demands an Integrated Analysis of Biomass

The large natural carbon fluxes between atmosphere and terrestrial biosphere in combination with our substantial control over terrestrial biotic productivity (Vitousek et al., 1986) grants us a powerful lever for manipulating atmospheric CO2. Proposals to use this leverage to offset CO2 emitted from fossil fuels are roughly as old as modern knowledge of the CO2-climate problem (NAS, 1977). More...

Author's personal copy Review and model-based analysis of factors influencing soil carbon sequestration under hybrid poplar5

The potential for soil carbon (C) sequestration under short-rotation woody crops, like hybrid poplar (Populus spp.), is a significant uncertainty in our understanding of how managed tree plantations might be used to partially offset increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Through development of amulti-compartmentmodel,we reviewed information fromstudies on hybrid poplar and analyzed the pote...

Carbon sequestration potential in soil and stand of Nitraria schoberi L.

Arid and semi-arid lands cover around one-third of the world's terrestrial expanse and their widespread plantdistributions provide these areas with a high potential for sequestering carbon. Vegetation management for developingshrub or tree species in arid and semi-arid regions is one inexpensive and multi-purpose approach for decreasing CO2.This study assessed the potential of carbon sequestrat...

Bioenergy crop models: descriptions, data requirements, and future challenges

Field studies that address the production of lignocellulosic biomass as a source of renewable energy provide critical data for the development of bioenergy crop models. A literature survey revealed that 14 models have been used for simulating bioenergy crops including herbaceous and woody bioenergy crops, and for crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) crops. These models simulate field-scale produc...

Genetic and Molecular Controls on Carbon Sequestration – Implications for Terrestrial Ecosystems

Carbon sequestration in terrestrial vegetation and soils is a poorly understood process, but ultimately represents a summation of biological activities including the initial incorporation of atmospheric CO2 into plant carbohydrates through photosynthesis, carbon partitioning to chemical forms of organic matter resistant to microbial decomposition and carbon allocation to recalcitrant pools of b...
